M.GMAIL GETS MULTIPLE SIGN-IN

September 22, 2011 0

Gmail mobile web app has a few new productive features, which includes multiple sign-in for Google services. On the web, it has been a highly requested feature and earlier this year Google had an inclusion of support for it. Having done that, finally this feature is available on mobile devices too. Looking at the bottom of the web app, one can just tap the e-mail address, they want to log in from and bring up a menu to switch between accounts, sign into a new one, or sign out of all of them.

There is however more to the update than just the multiple sign-in support. One can now even edit some of their settings from Gmail, which can be directly from their phone. The settings icon is revamped in the menu bar and if one taps on it, they would see a small settings page where there are a few options to play with.

In here, one has an option to override their existing e-mail signature with a signature which is mobile-specific. However, they cannot format it with the use of rich text. There is yet another option which can be enabled from one’s mobile device, which is the vacation auto-responder. Here, one has to just set the start and end dates, along with a subject and a message.

The Mobile-specific signature is an appreciated addition as at times one might feel that autocorrect and other mobile spell-checks can prove to be a hassle at you type on the go. For example, “monitors” might type in as “mojitos”, due to the mobile typing. Again, others might not know that a user is replying via his cell which might be the reason because of which one’s post would be limited to a few typos only. Mobile signature will thus be a savior in this case. To create a mobile signature, from the menu view, press the new settings icon, choose a defined signature, and then check the box available to activate it. To disable the mobile signature, one can uncheck the box.

Gmail team has showed even in the past that they really care for mobile users who prefer staying productive in their approach, when they came up with numerous updates to the mobile site to prove it. There might still be a few users lingering with the mobile experience, which have not turned out to be that helpful as they would be on a desktop or a laptop. Those requirements might just be fulfilled in the future.

For those who have bookmarked Gmail on their mobiles, will have to update the bookmark as Google has changed URLs to accommodate the new feature of multiple accounts. There’s no approval process on the web, so the said new features would be available currently. This would in fact be reliving for many users wanting to use this feature.

However, there might be many users who have more than one Gmail account and this new feature would enhance its overall usability.
