Facebook For iPhone Debuts Event Check-Ins, Maps And Unfriending

April 5, 2011 0

Los Angeles — A couple weeks ago, the social media network Facebook unfurled Check-Ins To Events, and as promised, the company has released a new version of its application that gives users full capability to check in to events via the iPhone and their mobile-based touch site.

Version 3.4 of Facebook’s iPhone app released Monday actually has a few other nifty updates as well. The salient new features, along with subtle news feed improvements and a user interface refresh for notifications, have been embedded into the existing Facebook iPhone experience. These include the ability to view your friends on a map from the Places, and the “Unfriend” button, a new, extended option when viewing a friend’s profile in the app, is explicitly called out with a noticeable red button.

Initially, the updated Facebook iPhone app now lets you check in to events. The new event check-in functionality is housed within the events portion of the app. The app user can check in to nearby, upcoming events and tag their friends should they so choose. So, if you are at a birthday party, it will scour your events calendar and your location to let you check in to it if you are at the right time and place.

Moreover, the map view for Places has been attached to the Places section. Here users can switch between “Activity” and “Map” options to view check-ins in the standard list view or switch to see them on a map.

The updates make for a slightly enhanced overall application experience that now lets you ditch your social media network buddies on the go. As you can see in the video (video below), the unfriending process is pretty simple, as you merely have to click on a friend, hit the options menu, click on “unfriend” and then confirm it.
