DISASTER RECOVERY EASED WITH GOOGLE APPS

September 23, 2011 0

Google recently had yet another blog post, boasting about its trustworthiness, related to customer’s business data. This one was related to Google Apps. The post started with detailing about the business related problems one can face in case of technology failures and natural disasters. The cost involved for the same was even in detail as it was considered cumbersome and expensive.

The post noted that to measure the effectiveness of a disaster recovery plan, usually, two ways are opted: one is the Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and the other is Recovery Point Objective (RPO). RTO looks into the measuring of the time line for users to access the systems in case of a failure. RPO on the other hand works on measuring the time gap which exits, once the data is restored.

Google Apps had a better offering for these disasters and technology failures. It noted that this would be related to robust disaster recovery capabilities built right in. Google stated that its RPO and RTO designs have been tailor made to effect no loss and quick recovery for businesses who wish not to lose out on valuable data and time. It said its RPO design target is zero data loss and the RTO design target is instant failover, which means that in case of any disruption or disaster which affects Google’s any one data center, they can quickly have a shift over to the alternate data center, which helps one continue working without any interruptions.

Google was quick to state that no disaster recovery solution from any provider has been up with a perfect solution for its customers and this is what makes Google proud of to benefit its customers in the best possible way.

Google noted that they knew that businesses work hard to invest a lot of time in disaster recovery preparation that are typically able to set goals related to RTO and RPO, at a given point of time, which is usually a few hours or less for critical systems. Moreover, the cost involved for the same never seems to be on the downfall. For those businesses, who have not invested time and money to the above said extent, the recovery via RTO and RPO might stretch into hours or days. This can even lead to the worse circumstances, wherein a few businesses might have to start all over again, if a disaster strikes.

As Mark Switalski, Macomb County Circuit Court Chief Judge, and Carmella Sabaugh, Macomb County Clerk had quoted their thoughts on the same, here is an extract of it:

“We know that when a disaster happens, our system will not go down and because our data is in the cloud, it is protected and accessible from anywhere. After a rare tornado hit last summer, briefly disrupting power and some network services, the clerk’s Google service remained accessible via cell phone and other networks.”

Google had a concluding para to assure its customers that with Google Apps, even a disaster planning process would be easy to handle and tension free.

The editor, however, noted that this post was a part of the series, exploring the top ten reasons ‘why customers trust Google with their business data’. For those who wish to look at the other nine reasons, they can view them here.
