YOUTUBE INSIGHTS ARE NOT YOUTUBE ANALYTICS

December 1, 2011 0

Google seems to be starting the festive month of December with some recognizable analytics for its YouTube users. Till now, YouTube users were able to only know who is watching their videos, along with a few other details, such as from where the viewer is watching it and when, with the help of the YouTube Insights feature. This feature was launched in March 2008, but recently, Google announced in a blog post that they are coming up with the next generation of Insights which has been named as “YouTube Analytics”.

YouTube Analytics, product manager Ted Hamilton, the author of the said blog post ran the numbers on a viral video of twin babies having an unintelligible conversation. This was noted as he wrote, “That video was shot in Brooklyn, and has been viewed more than 10 million times in the U.S., and 30 million times outside the U.S.” He continued noting, “Five percent of its views came from Brazil, another 5 percent from Russia. Turns out, 1 out of 100 people in the Philippines watched these two babies from New York. One of the great joys of a global platform is finding out that people from afar can relate, connect, and appreciate your videos.”

The search engine giant will be releasing the new insight to everyone into the Google Analytics over the course of the day. The changes would be rolled out to “everyone with a modern browser” today, though one can still access Insight if they want to do a little comparison of capabilities.

This YouTube Analytics strikes a similarity with Google Analytics and even the Facebook Insights, as the statistics provided by YouTube Analytics in its new version has some interesting features –

  • A quick overview feature provides all of the information that you care about quickly.

  • Detailed statistics to have more precise understanding of our content and audiences.

  • Ability to discover which videos are driving the most views and subscriptions.

  • New audience retention report to see how far viewers are watching through your video.

Other important features to note here, apart from the above mentioned features, is the ‘Data Filter’ tool. This tool is one, which can be used to filter out information on the basis of it’s content, geography or date.

For the reports, it was noted that by default, they come as a Line Chart and captures the distribution of a metric over the specified date range. Along with it, one would even notice the Date granularity &Compare metric, while selecting a second metric for comparison, which will be displayed on the graph. An example for the same is that you can chart Viewers next to Unique Viewers.

However, some reports even have an “interactive map”, which gives geographic distribution of the metric by hovering the mouse over specific countries. If one intends to make required changes in these reports, they can make them by changing the parameters and it can be downloaded then. One can check their YouTube Analytics for their channels here.

If one is interested in understanding the concept in detail, then they can have a look at the infographic about the all new YouTube Analytics from Google that speaks volumes about “the story behind the numbers”, posted below:
