Yahoo Rolls Out “#HashOut” A Social Media Talk Show

August 14, 2012 0

Sunnyvale, California — In a surprising move, internet pioneer Yahoo unveiled plans for an upcoming web-streamed talk show Monday that will be hosted by some notable guests, including “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof and journalist Maria Shriver.

With a large number of Internet companies are now engaged in creating their own content, Yahoo is also getting in the game.

The Web pioneer announced on Monday that it is working on a social media talk show dubbed “#HashOut,” the program — which bills itself as the first talk show to be conducted over social media — will go live later this month, according to its homepage.

As a matter of fact, Yahoo is considering the show as “a new way to talk about the news,” and says that it is also “the first talk show conducted over social media.”

In addition the people listed above, other guests taking part in the show — aka “the #hashout panel” — include celebrated author Gary Shteyngart, Jezebel founder Anna Holmes, and comedian Baratunde Thurston.

The cast of panelists, as pictured on the site, includes Jezebel founder Anna Holmes, journalist and author and journalist Maria Shriver, Princeton professor Anne-Marie Slaughter and “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof, among others.

The show will be aired online at a time when traditional broadcasters have sought to increase viewer engagement by integrating social media into their programs.

On the other hand, the corner of the television screen is often watermarked with relevant hashtags, and television executives are working to catch up to the so-called “second screen,” keeping easily distracted viewers glued to their programming rather than their friends’ latest Facebook statuses.

Besides, video streaming and e-commerce companies, like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, have also been reportedly digging into their own content creation over the past year, heating up competition with traditional cable TV networks. Rumor has it that even Twitter is readying for its own reality TV show.

However, for ‘#HashOut’, Yahoo is inviting potential viewers to enter their e-mail to be alerted when the talk show goes live. It is unclear when the show will air, but more details are supposedly forthcoming.
