Yahoo Messenger Now Optimized For iPad 2, Supports Video Calling

May 20, 2011 0

Sunnyvale, California — Fans of the Yahoo Messenger messaging platform can now enjoy video calling on iPad 2. In a bid to lure its vast audience, last night, announced that it has updated the Yahoo Messenger app to work with the iPad, as well as adding voice and video calling features for iPad 2 owners, a sleek new iPad-optimized interface, and improved spam management that lets you block one or all add requests from a single view.

Surprisingly, it seems that the developers are expanding the capabilities of the applications that supported the iPhone 4 beyond the smartphone. Previously, Yahoo users would have to depend solely on the iPhone app, but the new iOS version empowers them to stay connected with friends whether they are on the iPad, mobile or PC. Now, be prepared to share photos and videos with your Messenger contacts in real-time directly from the iPad 2.

Interestingly though, Yahoo! Messenger, still today, is a very popular cross-platform communications application, meaning iPad 2 people can now enjoy video calling with their PC and Mac counterparts. Besides, Yahoo Messenger had already been accessible on the iPhone and iPod Touch since April 2009. But with this Universal update, iPad users will no longer have to use the unoptimized iPhone client on their larger iPad screens.

Moreover, the Yahoo! Messenger service, allows users to connect with their friends on the Yahoo and Windows Live instant messaging networks, as well as it has also combined the Yahoo! Voice service, which allows users to place international VoIP (Voice over IP) calls to landlines or mobile phones.

Now no longer just for instant messages, the Yahoo Messenger empowers you to share photos and videos, send free text messages to mobile phones in select countries, make free voice calls to other Yahoo Messenger users, and you can communicate with friends and family whether they are on a PC, Android phone, or any other Yahoo Messenger compatible device.

Yahoo! Messenger for iPad has the following features:

  • First official Yahoo! Messenger app designed specifically for the iPad.

  • Voice and Video: Make free voice and video calls to your Yahoo! Messenger friends.

  • Free SMS: Send free text messages.

  • Allows you to make low cost international calls to landlines or mobile phones via the integrated Yahoo! Voice service.

  • Get ready to share photos and video in real-time via the iPad 2.

  • Windows Live Interop allows you to keep your contacts in one place so that you can IM with your Windows Live Messenger friends.

  • Multitasking: Notification alerts are supported. You will be notified when an IM arrives, even when the app is running in the background.

Additionally, the program also boasts stronger anti-spam capabilities allowing you to block one or all add requests from a single view. iPad 2 users do not have a lot of video calling choices apart from Apple’s FaceTime and a few less fancy programs.

If you are an Yahoo! Messenger enthusiast, this is a great addition for iPad owners. The voice and video calls to your Messenger friends will be free of charge, so there is no need to worry about what equipment your friends are using, as long as they are connected to Yahoo! Messenger on a iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Windows PC or Android phone.

As a universal app, you can update Yahoo Messenger by hitting Update in the iTunes store or downloading the latest version directly. The latest version 2.1, now available free from the App Store, is a universal binary that supports both the iPhone’s smaller screen and iPad’s larger canvas.

The application is available in nine languages — English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia, and Romanian.
