Yahoo Mail Suffers Another Outage — Users Considering Gmail

August 4, 2011 0

Sunnyvale, California — Internet pioneer Yahoo’s Mail and other services appeared to have suffered another outage Wednesday, “for some users in certain locations,” Yahoo acknowledged this morning, but according to the online company, its services are now operating normally.

Earlier today, an influential technology network CNET heard from a reader who claimed that “Yahoo Mail has been experiencing severe outage issues for the last 24-hours plus.” After attempting to access Yahoo’s Mail service, CNET received an error message saying that the “page you requested was not found.” Other attempts also produced a “connection refused” message from the site. When trying to access the mail service through Yahoo’s QuickView, the service said that it could not “connect to your mail server.”

Another leading tech blog Mashable obtained this error message saying “This webpage is not available” and “Error 501 (net::ERR_INSECURE_RESPONSE): Unknown error.” Some users have taken to Twitter to complain: “Yahoo Mail is not letting me log in. That is probably its way of saying ‘Stop using Yahoo Mail.,’” reads a tweet from @pensexperienceM. “WTF is wrong with #Yahoo mail?” asks @LisaPampuch.

An apparently official statement from Yahoo on the matter is making the rounds on Twitter as well. It says, “Some Yahoo services are currently inaccessible..We are working to correct the issue.”

Mashable also collected another, slightly longer statement saying, “Some Yahoo services are currently inaccessible to some users in certain locations. We are working to correct the issue and restore all functionality immediately. We know that this may have caused some inconvenience and we apologize to our users who might be affected.”

But, many have taken to Twitter to voice their complaints.

Apparently, it seems that the issue was affecting people around the globe. On Twitter, a slew of users are posting tweets, saying that they cannot connect to the service. Some have put it simply, saying, “cannot log into Yahoo Mail.” Others seem perplexed, with one person asking, “why is Yahoo Mail so messed up?”

Besides those complains, DownRightNow.com, a site that tracks downtime for popular Web services, is reporting that Yahoo Mail appears to be down. It also appears that people seem to be searching Google, hoping to find the site when Yahoo cannot. Top Google Trends at the moment include: “yahoo.com sign in,” “yahoo.com mail,” and “www.yahoo.com mail.”

Ultimately, the outage was not universal. Two CNET staffers say they are having no problem accessing Yahoo Mail.

In a follow-up statement to CNET, Yahoo said that “we worked quickly to resolve the issue, and are pleased that all services are restored to full functionality.”
