Sunnyvale, California — Internet leader Yahoo Inc.’s latest version of Yahoo Mail opened up for users a few months back, and on Wednesday the company has announced that it has attained two new milestone as of late. Its popular email service now retains over 100 million monthly active users, and its Facebook page has 500,000 fans, which has been heralded as the “most explosive page” on the social media network.
According to TechCrunch reporting that Yahoo still retains the top crown among free webmail providers in the United States. What accounts for this huge success? Well, rather than resting on its laurels, Yahoo added some features of the new version of Yahoo Mail that includes integrated notifications and messages from Facebook, Twitter, Zynga and other email providers within the interface, i.e., it got very open and very social.
Interestingly, to keep the temptation going, Yahoo has bundled in a few but essential changes to Yahoo Mail’s design. Seema Kamath, a product manager for Yahoo Mail, wrote on the service’s official blog that Yahoo receives approximately 5,000 pieces of feedback from users each day, which is keenly monitored by the company.
As TechCrunch describes, Yahoo also made the mail client speedier, more customizable with 50 themes, and enhanced its search function–including affixing the message toolbar at the bottom of messages, and the ability to switch between paginated and infinite scrolling views. Within the new Yahoo Mail, users can also use IM clients from Yahoo, Facebook, and Windows Live.
Thus, most of the changes are apparently inspired from that particular source. Along with some other interface update, the addition of message toolbar at the bottom of messages will boost productivity and navigation flow as well as a switch view feature that empowers users to toggle between paginated and infinite scrolling view.
As reported in May, Yahoo approximately boasts 90 million accounts and is the largest email provider in the U.S. Globally, Yahoo has more than 289 million people using its email client. Still, Techcrunch adds, “The email service is facing increasing competition from other clients like Gmail and Microsoft Hotmail and is losing some of its market share.”
Nevertheless, despite the impressive figures and Yahoo’s place at the top of free web-based email services, the hindrances towards subscribing to Yahoo Mail are still there. It took Yahoo Mail over three months to reel in another 10 million users from the 90 million it had in May. Whereas, Gmail, on the other hand, opens the door to Gchat, Google+, Google Apps and more.
