Yahoo introduces new multimedia search service called Yammy
Yahoo! Korea yesterday launched its multimedia search service "Yammy," vowing to recapture a leading position in the local search engine competition.
Yammy is the only Korean portal that can search all video files on the World Wide Web, said Seong Nak-yang, chief operating officer of Yahoo! Korea, at a press conference in Seoul. Yammy has also been made easy for the amateur user to upload his or her video contents by supporting a wide range of file formats, such as AVI, ASF and MPG.
The Korean unit of Yahoo! said that based on a Web crawling technology, Yammy http://multimedia.yahoo.co.kr allows access to the largest video contents among local search engines.
The search engine also offers automatic encoding, the process in which an video file is optimized to optimum volume and resolution.
Seong said Korean Internet users are increasingly shifting to moving images for their Web needs, and that Yammy will speed up that process. Yahoo! Korea was at the threshold of a big change starting with Yammy. The company is set to roll out more eye-opening services throughout next year, he said.
Gone are the days when internet search depended on editing, not technology. Yahoo! Korea will lead the market with user-friendliness and rich contents based on technology, Seong said.
Yahoo! Korea is currently placed third in the local search market. NHN Corp. operates the most popular local search engine, Naver, accounting for more than 60 percent of all search traffic in Korea.
