Mumbai, India — Good news for all the movie fans in India. Internet search pioneer Yahoo! in a head-to-head competition with YouTube’s BoxOffice, Yahoo! India has launched MoviePlex on Tuesday, a news service that will permit users to enjoy accredited full-length flicks free of charge.
It is figured that more than 30 million internet users download and watch 1.7 billion videos every month across India and to tap that online portal Yahoo unfurled Movieplex, which will bring thousands of licensed Bollywood movies to the users.
It will also advocate a piracy-free quality entertainment space. The service currently has an extremely limited collection of movies and is not sprinkled with advertisements yet.
Dubbed as Yahoo Movieplex, the new premium service which permits viewers to enjoy full-length movies on the internet. The newly announced website’s tiny selection consists of just eight movies, some of which are Aakrosh, Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji, Rock On!!, Rann, and Lamhaa, among others.
While the Movieplex shows are restricted to eight movies at present, the company says it is working with Indian movie studios to expand that selection to include thousands of movies and will continue offering them for free.
Although the movie pages are decorated with banner ads, the movies themselves do not feature any commercials in between, but that may soon change. The website uses Adobe Flash for streaming the movies and they work without any hangups on a regular 4Mbps broadband connection from BSNL.
Bollywood Life quotes Managing Director Arun Tadanki, Yahoo! India as saying, “Movieplex is an illustration of how Yahoo connects people to what matters to them the most and Indian movie lovers now have the best full-length movies available to them at their convenience.” Tadanki further added, “with the increasing demand for online video, both consumers and content providers are looking for a trusted destination where quality content can be consumed in a piracy-free environment at their leisure.”
According to a survey by market research leader comScore, the Indian audience is currently expending over 9.1 billion minutes watching online videos each month with entertainment as the prominent category in online video content consumption ahead of news and sports content.
Tadanki, anticipates that Movieplex would be successful in providing guilt-free entertainment to the consumers.
“Over 30 million internet users consume 1.7 billion videos every month across India. With the increasing demand for online video, both consumers and content providers are looking for a trusted destination where quality content can be consumed in a piracy-free environment at their leisure,” he said.
