Yahoo Goes HTML5, Optimizes Mail For Apple’s iPad

Sunnyvale, California — If you are tired of using the Apple iPad default mail client, you can now rejoice as Internet pioneer Yahoo in an attempt to offer “the best possible communications experience across all the devices” in use by Yahoo Mail users, the company on Tuesday unleashed an updated, HTML5-optimized version of Yahoo Mail for the iPad, promising a faster, more organized, and feature-rich experience to play well with the “magical” tablet.

Users who sign into Yahoo’s Web mail service via their iPad will now face an updated version of the site that has been configured to fit in with the iPad’s user interface aesthetic.

TMC’s CEO, Rich Tehrani, in a blog post observed that it is time for “Hats off to Yahoo for developing an impressive, must try mail experience on the iPad.”

“Yahoo Mail on the iPad is a beautiful thing and is a rare situation where an application is better than what Apple itself has created,” Tehrani said in his commentary.

“If you have used our recently launched HTML5 mobile Web mail for iPhone you will feel right at home,” Lee Parry, product manager for Yahoo Mail, wrote in a blog post. “We have kept all the things users love about our new mobile Web mail experience, while also optimizing for the gorgeous large screen of the iPad.”

According to Yahoo, the new version for the Apple iPad rocks because:

Faster and more reliable: If you are offline, Yahoo! Mail uses local caching capabilities to help you access and search your messages even without an Internet connection.

Smart: You can find and organize your messages using Full Search, personal folders and Smart Folders with messages from your most important contacts and optimized views for photos and file attachments.

Feature Rich: View rich photo attachments in their full form, or as previews directly in the inbox view. Also includes a dual-pane view to make reading and organizing a breeze. This includes portrait and landscape support and scrolling up and down one’s message list and messages themselves with acceleration.

In addition to above listed features, Yahoo states that even if you do not have an internet connection, Yahoo Mail on the iPad will utilize local caching capabilities to store messages within the browser’s memory allowing users to access and search their mail without being connected to the Web. You can search using full search, personal folders, or a smart folder of most important contacts.

“Who would have imagined Yahoo would beat them at their own game?” Tehrani said in a reference to Apple. “The bar has been raised and we can expect Apple to come out swinging with similar features in a new update which they will tout in their commercials as if they were first.”

The revamped Yahoo Mail “will be accessible globally to anyone who has an iPad,” Parry said. Access it via Safari on the iPad at http://mail.yahoo.com.

The company proposes to continue adding more features and functionality.
