New York — Yahoo! has acquired a new domain name called “Me.Me,” for its Yahoo Meme micro-blogging service — as a part of its strategy to compete with Twitter.
With its earnings swelling up in Q1 2010 over Q1 2009, and things appear to be looking good for Yahoo with improved ad spending, this will serve as a nice add-on for its Yahoo Meme service which was supposed to take on Twitter. The Me.me domain name will, naturally enough, tie in to Yahoo’s micro-blogging site, Meme.Meme has been described as a Twitter clone with random references to dogs instead of birds. The domain owes its name to the country of Montenegro and the particulars of the deal are being kept undisclosed.
This is clear indication that Yahoo! has big ideas for the Yahoo Meme, and it will be interesting to see other moves the company makes over the next few months, Antonio Silveira, director of product development and engineering, Yahoo! Says,
Silveira, added that he would like that to change, though. In a press release announcing the new acquisition, Silveira outlined the Me.me domain name as “an essential component of our online branding strategy.”
Jeremiah Johnston, the COO of Sedo (which assisted Yahoo purchase the domain name), also stated, “We are pleased to extend our relationship with one of the Internet’s most recognized brands, and help Yahoo! determine the best domain name strategy to fully engage its social networking audience.”
It seems as though with this acquisition, we might see Yahoo embarking on a marketing campaign to promote their Meme service which has rivals in the form of Google Buzz and Twitter.
