Twitter Launches Refurbished Homepage—Again

April 22, 2011 0

New York — Earlier this month, popular micro-blogging social networking–Twitter, just after posting and then removing a new homepage, Twitter is back at it again with a fresh slick look and strikingly similar to Facebook, but apparently this time comes with fewer bugs.

Due to some unforeseen server problems, and people had trouble with their accounts, so it was quickly reverted to the previous version. The kinks are apparently ironed out now, as it is back.

However, the new homepage of Twitter was visible to very few users only. Today the new Twitter Home Page/Sign-in Page was made live to all users and places a great emphasis on “following your interests.”

The Twitter homepage has seen quite a few revisions so far, coming a long way from its humble beginnings. Recently, since co-founder Jack Dorsey’s resumed his day-to-day operations at the company, he has emphasized the need for Twitter to make people understand how the service can be useful to them. This homepage would seem to reflect this mentality.

Co-founder Evan Williams, who relieved himself from day-to-day operations as Dorsey stepped back in, seems to agree:

Ever since the enforcement of new Twitter homepage took place, quite a number of elements of service started to vanish one by one. However, fixing those temporarily absent features like Trends, Lists, etc., new homepage finally went live for all users.

Now, just how useful this will be remains to be seen. The new homepage aims to promotes the idea of following topics and interests over people, though some specific users are featured on the page. The new screen lists a number of popular Twitter accounts and appears designed to encourage users to select who they follow based on what they are interested in.

Specifically the page displays a big slogan, “Follow your interests.” So, if you click on ‘follow your interests’ you are simply taken to Top Tweets — not the most efficient way to find accounts tailored to you personal interests.

Home Page refurbishment seems to be a yearly cycle for Twitter because the social network revamped its home page last year in March. You can view the site’s homepage’s first transition here, or compare the new page to its predecessor here.

With the New Twitter and now a new Home Page, Twitter is slowly making User Interface changes. Several users loved the new neat looking homepage. However, on the contrary, several users feel that it looks like Facebook login page but that would not cause any hitch between Twitter and Facebook.

In any case, the newly released homepage also places great emphasis on search, which can be useful for finding real-time info, but is not best for account discovery.
