July 18, 2012 0

Los Angeles — Striving to make its dominance more tempting, popular micro-blogging outfit Twitter is tirelessly keeping busy this summer with a slew of updates to its line of products, and now the 140 character service is tidying up TweetDeck with yet another updated version 1.5 for web and desktop client has been released and it brings improved browsing, column management, and actions.

The latest Tweetdeck application now available with a new layout for “swifter navigation,” between columns, and arranges columns in one continuous horizontal row for a smooth left and right scrolling experience. A new “Columns” button has been added front-and-center to make reordering columns a breeze and to make jumping to a specific column a much brisker task, along with expanded actions for tweets, and even a revamped Twitter bird icon.

All this comes in the form of a refurbished column browse button, sideways scroll bar and gesture support. Also, there is a new little menu icon packed with every tweet that provides users with quick access to tweet actions such as follow, direct message, add to list, and report spam actions from the main column view. Clicking on the timestamp of any given tweet now brings you to its page on Twitter.com.

Browse Easily:

The fresh changes to Tweetdeck means that the columns are all arranged in to an uninterrupted horizontal, row, allowing you to navigate smoothly left and right with the scrollbar. The redesigned Columns button at the top allows you to scroll several columns at a time by clicking the arrows either side of the “Columns” button on the top toolbar. You can also click the “Columns” button to reveal the full list of all the columns in your TweetDeck and access any column immediately. This will jump you through several at once.

Manage Your Columns:

With the addition of new Columns button that allows you to organize your columns easily by grabbing the handles on the right and dragging them up and down. With the column drop-down open, simply hover over the “drag” icon to the right of the column name you wish to move, click and drag the column to its new position, then drop.

Take Act On What Is Happening:

There is also a brand new action button integrated with tweets that lets you reply, follow, send a DM, manage list memberships, grab a link, email the tweet or delete it.

Among other things, a menu icon on every Tweet allows you instant access to more Tweet actions, like “Create link,” and user-related actions, like “Block”. This makes it possible report a user for spam, add an account to a list, delete your own Tweet, and much more, all without having to leave your main column view.

This is similar to the menu available at many other third-party apps of late, so it is nice to see it come to one of Twitters own apps.

TweetDeck explained:

Today you can more easily discover and react to the information you care about with new navigation features in TweetDeck. You have given us some really useful feedback after using these features on web.tweetdeck.com, and now you can use this swifter TweetDeck on other platforms too. This swifter version of TweetDeck is available now at tweetdeck.com, where you can download TweetDeck for Windows, access the Chrome app or sign in to web.tweetdeck.com. The updated TweetDeck for Mac will be available in the Mac App Store shortly.

Nevertheless, the overall improvements are mostly about making TweetDeck more efficient as a power tool and less in line with the app consistency upgrades Twitter has pushed out to its mobile applications. The refinements, however, should come as welcome changes to the Twitter user that tracks a bevy of columns and interacts with tweets on a frequent basis.

You can download TweetDeck 1.5 from here. It will be also be available shortly from the Mac App Store here.
