THE WEATHER CHANNEL: TWITTER’S NEW PARTNER

August 12, 2011 0

Twitter has teamed up with The Weather Channel and this partnership has announced the launch of The Weather Channel Social. This is a new initiative taken up by the duo which would integrate local weather-related tweets on the Internet with the help of the platform of The Weather Channel to tweet out the weather updates. The source to get these tweets can be the Web, mobile or TV. Twitter’s director of content and programming, Chloe Sladden said that the micro-blogging service targets the interests of the people and weather has been a hot topic which the users like to tweet about. It was noted that this integration was partnered because of the efforts of Wiredset’s conversation analysis technology and Trendrr social curation.

For the project, The Weather Channel has come up with the creation of Twitter feeds for specific cits which is populated with at least 100,000 people. These Twitter feeds are custom-type and for the count it comes up to 220. If one wants to access these feeds, they can do it from weather.com/social. One can access their location feeds if they click on “Follow the Forecast” link which is placed on these forecasting pages on the website. Alternatively, they can even look out for it if they enter their state’ city or their ZIP code.

The website of The Weather Channel, shows a Social module which has been placed on each and every page which is for forecasting the local weather. One can find it below the current weather conditions. It displays a tweet which would detail the weather in the specific location. There is surely a unique feature which would be appreciated by the users and even have some good interaction on the current weather status. There is a local Social page for each city where the tweets are shown for the specific city. This gives the liberty to the users to post in their views and thoughts on the current weather.

iPhone users would have this Weather Channel app with tweets which can be viewed on forecast pages. It would give the iPhone user an option which is quite similar to the website’s option wherein one can look at a local social page which is dedicated to a specific city and know what others are saying about the current weather. They can even add their thoughts about the weather in that section via a tweet.

The TV broadcast of The Weather Channel would even see an integration of these tweets. It would give an idea via the tweets of how enjoyable or terrible the weather is. Its again an interesting update as The Weather Channel will detail in a story as to how the lives of people have been affected by the weather in severe weather conditions in a specific area.

The idea of coming up with this integration would serve The Weather Channel good as in America, every minute there are approximately 200 tweets. This would help the cause for the new partner of Twitter as populating users for tweets would be easy. Again it would interest the people as they would like to know what their neighbors are tweeting about the weather and how have they been affected by it.

The partnership is sponsored by Citi and as reported by The Wall Street Journal, the revenue which they earn out of it would be shared by The Weather Channel and Twitter. This is once again an option opted by Twitter to monetize its services. Recently they had even come up with promoted tweets into timelines. Again there are rumors that they are coming up with gaming service which might be out soon.
