Los Angeles — Following the footsteps of Amazon, Sony in a teaser has provided some of the initial details of its promised Android and iPhone apps. This mobile Reader app for Apple iOS and Google Android platform is due for release next month.
Surely, Sony is late to the game, but now Sony Reader and the Reader Store are available for iPhone or iOS devices and on Android. The mobile Reader app will give users a way to shop from Sony’s e-book store, together with the regular features like making bookmarks, notes, highlights and adjust font size, with featured titles getting book covers, and the book browser itself will initially be visual.
Of course, unless you already own a Sony Reader, you have probably already picked up the rivals Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Nobles for Apple iOS or Google Android platforms.
Nevertheless, if you are an iPhone user maybe you have been rocking iBooks. Besides, the new Sony Reader App would not do anything different or magical compared to the Apple iBooks, Amazon Kindle App, and Nook Reader App for iOS platform. Same set of features and services are being available only to the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad owners.
Back in June, Amazon included embeddable video and audio support in the Kindle App which will make its users enjoy more interactive eBook content on the iPhone. This makes the Sony Reader App and Nook Reader App features repetitive and somewhat redundant. Anyway, still want to pick up the app just for kicks to have an alternative to what you already have? Or maybe you have tons of titles on your Sony Reader and you would like to view content on your iPhone or Android while on the go.
Keep your eyes peeled for when the app becomes available some time next month. Both mobile apps should be available sometime in December. The company has not set out requirements or explained whether or not the iOS version will have native iPad support. Syncing should be common across all platforms.
