SAMSUNG ANNOUNCED ICS UPGRADE FOR DEVICES; GALAXY TAB 7” AND GALAXY S OMITTED

December 26, 2011 0

Samsung had an announce ment dedication to their plans of releasing Ice Cream Sandwich on their pre-existing handsets. Their devices named Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note would be soon getting these updates, with the help of which, they would be able to switch over to the IceCream Sandwich OS. The South Korean giant has axed two of its popular devices from the upgrade list. Galaxy S will see the axe in the smartphone section, while Galaxy Tab 7”, in the Tablet section would also be axed from the upgrade list.

The omission list is a surprise to a number of veterans of these devices, as well as to the experts in the tech world. The reason for the same is that Galaxy S has been very successful, globally, ever since it has been launched. But noting a report by The Verge, Samsung has no plans to update it to Android 4.0.

Samsung cited a number of reasons for the omission. The company stated that Galaxy S runs on an insufficient RAM and ROM. This in turn renders it inadequate to be able to run alongside Samsung’s TouchWiz UI that is baked into the handset. It was even noted that the search engine giant, Google, has already started seeding the Nexus S with Ice Cream Sandwich with OTA updates.

Interestingly, the specifications of the two handsets in question, that is Nexus S and Galaxy S, are quite identical. But Samsung still defended its thought stating that with the Nexus S, the handset runs solely on Android without the addition of Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. Hence, the handset would probably not be able to cope with the implementation of ICS, along with TouchWiz.

Talking about the Galaxy Tab 7”, the company cited similar reasons. A blog post noted that this tab already has additional software features like TouchWiz, widgets, video calling and carrier software pack-ins. This meant that the running of the new operating system would not be supported as it does not have the the required RAM and ROM.

This would definitely be a disappointing piece of news for a number of users of these two devices. Moreover, the confusion would still prevail as there would be a lingering thought in the minds of a number of users, along with the hackers, who now have a new task on their hands to see to it if there is a possibility of the same or no.
