PRICE DROP, UPDATES, IN-FLIGHT WIFI: GOOGLE CHROMEBOOKS

November 28, 2011 0

Its holiday season and it seems Google’s cloud-based computers are being pushed for a price drop, so that people might think of investing a part of their fortune in buying Chromebooks. The news was announced over the weekend, but there is an addition to that news. Basically, the Chrome OS is getting some in-demand tweaks and for one who uses the aerial route for their holidays, might just get access to a free Chromebook during their flight.

The sales of Chromebook have nowhere seen great success, but being a new concept, people might take time in recognizing such a unique product. Moreover, the efforts from Google’s end has been extensive which might help improving the sales of Chromebook in the times to come.

The price fall was announced by Venkat Rapaka, Senior Product Manager, in a recent Google post, wherein he said that Chromebooks will be dropping in price just in time for the holiday buying frenzy. The price fall would be for all official Chromebook partners with an immediate effect. Detailing about the price fall, the revised prices are as under:

  • Samsung 5 3G: $449M
  • Samsung 5 WiFi: $349
  • Acer AC-700 3G: $399
  • Acer AC-700 WiFi: $299

Roughly, the prices have seen a fall of $50 to each model, which brings the lowest model in at under $300. Moreover, the Samsung WiFi-only model is now being offered in a black version too. This was earlier available only in pearl.

To add to the excitement, Chrome OS has had a number of screaming updates. It was noted that there would be a few nice aesthetic upgrades (the Chrome Web Store and the user login page have both been re-touched), but the biggest addition of all of them would be its easy access to vital OS locations. The same was even noted in a recent Google statement, wherein the users can now find simple links to the “File Manager on your Chromebook, as well as to music apps and games in the Chrome Web Store,” right from the “new tab” page.

On one hand, the Chromebook prices have seen a drop and a number of new features have been pumped in, and on the other hand, Google’s core pitch for the Chrome OS remains the same. One can note the same in the video below:

Talking about the wireless partnership between Google and Virgin, it was noted that it still continues strong in this regard. The re-upping of their partnership would mean that Virgin would be offering wireless connectivity for users, which would help them in using Chromebooks during flights.

The two entered into a partnership earlier this year, with Virgin offering free Chromebooks to use after lift-off. The partnership got a list, earlier this month, when the search engine giant partnered Virgin yet again to offer free in-flight WiFi.

If a user wants to get adequate knowledge about how to get a Chromebook with WiFi access for your flight, they can visit the Virgin Chrome Zone site.
