MICROSOFT THE REAL WINNER FROM GOOGLE-MOTOROLA DEAL: ACER

September 6, 2011 0

Acer said that the actual winner of the Motorola buyout was Microsoft and not Google. The Taiwanese Electronics Maker actually said that the $12.5 billion acquisition was a blessing in disguise for Microsoft. President of Acer’s operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa, Walter Deppeler made this statement for Reuters and the reason behind it was that Google was now working “against some of their clients.” Deppeler quoted his point of view at the IFA expo in Berlin.

The deal of Motorola being acquired by Google broke last month when the search engine giant announced that it would put in $12.5 billion to acquire Motorola. This was however subject to approval from authorities. The move from Google has come in at a time when its Android-using partners are thriving to better their position with tablets and smartphones using the Android platform. This can be a worry for these partners as Google has entered a business niche.

The deal as it is had many tongues wagging about the deal details as to why’s and who’s of the deal. Some stated it to be a move to acquire the patents which was an intellectual property of Motorola, so that Google could protect its Android OS from the ongoing and the future lawsuits relating to patent infringements. Another thought that emerged out of many minds was that Google would use the acquisition to save a fortune on taxes as Motorola had a less than stellar income statement. The competitive thought made many worry as to would Google stand in direct competition to its partners and t continues to be a big question mark in many companies’ and consumers’ minds.

There would not be any doubt that once Google has its hands on Motorola completely, it would become a direct competitor to its partnerwho would then consider Android a less appealing platform. The announcement of acquisition even had its after effects as there were reports wherein Samsung had its officials ordering to move its focus more on Bada, which was its proprietary platform.

This would give Microsoft a better chance to popularize its Windows Phone platform. The confidence and business can even be moved on a large scale from Android. One such instance can even be seen when Samsung moved out and came up with its first phone powered with the Mongo OS.

Talking about Deppeler’s views, he had even stated that Acer would wait and watch the deal’s implications before it chooses an operating system it prefers to choose in the future. The main concern would be that even if Motorola continues as it is, there is a possibility that Google at some point of time might give its assumed own warehouse devices a preferential treatment on Android software releases, before it is out for other Android partners.

Till there is no clear detailing on the acquisition deal and any such preferential thoughts, Microsoft would clearly have the upper hand and the benefits it could reap out of it could be enormous. Microsoft’s WP7 has not been a major hit with the market and seeking deal announcement, it can flog its Mango OS while insisting that they would not get involved in the hardware business. This can even be a major hit for the Software Giant.

Google’s response now would be really crucial as they will have to keep their cool if then intend to keep its Android partners happy.
