ICS update is the need of the hour for every Android user and here one would note that ICS (CM9) is out for a few more devices. The latest to the addition is the Nook Color and Kindle Fire. The experimental build of IceCream Sandwich might be in with a few bugs, but those bugs relate to only the hardware aspects of a phone’s functionality. One can still make use of a number of features of ICS in these devices.
One can expect the installation to be quite meticulous as it isn’t an official update, but rather an unofficially official update from the Cyanogen Mod factory.
For newbies, it is always better that they wait a while before getting their hands on the early Android 4.0 version. Moreover, these updates still don’t satisfy the Nook Color and Kindle Fire owners to the fullest.
This update had a lot more to note. ICS, from the time has come out on the Galaxy Nexus, Android owners wanted to note that if they get the ICS update on their devices, how would things change for them. Detailing for each and every device is not possible currently, but the benefits can be listed.
A few things that work perfectly on the Nook Color ICS CM9, are Bluetooth (pairing/file transfer only confirmed), Wi-FI, backlight, accelerometer, Google Apps, Setcpu/overclock, Battery levels/charging, physical menu button, touchscreen, 3D games, screenshots, and USB-mounting. While majorly there is Sound, video and full 2d acceleration support lag.
Talking about the Kindle Fire, Touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Audio work swiftly, but Bluetooth, Landscape Launcher and SD card partition problems make the upgrade look dull and ineffective.
These problems and errors might force many users to stay away from the update, noting that there is a possible update for the same, which would fix a number of noted issues.
However, if one still wants to winger around with this update. The process is simple.
This experimental build can be found by a user on the XDA Developer’s forum and the version for the Nook Color can be downloaded from here. The download for the Kindle Fire is available here. A new build with SD card fix is even available.
Complications can be assumed for a newbie, but otherwise the instructions, it is simple. Backup, Do a FACTORY WIPE, Install (all in TWRP).
Below, a video is even posted, showing the ICS being upgraded on a Kindle Fire tablet. The upgrade looks clean, but the negatives of the same are already detailed above.
