Not all users seems to have been affected by the crashes, however numerous reports came flooding in saying that Google Voice version 1.3.0.1771, when used on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5, was causing a few headaches.
At time of composing the App Store revealed the version updated on 17 August of this year, that requires iOS 3.0 or later, so if you want the most recent edition you will have to wait for the fix. Although, Google is currently busy on a fix which will allow them to re-upload a new version of the Google Voice application and restore their service as soon as possible.
According to one who circulated his grievances on an online forum, “After updating to iOS 5, the Google Voice app began to crash continuously. It received push notifications perfectly, but I was unable to open the app to see them because it would crash immediately upon opening, before even displaying any graphics.”
Sources claim that it might be working for you, but you still would not be able to create new messaging threads or make outgoing calls using your Google Voice number.
Surprisingly though, Google Voice Product Manager Vincent Paquet is aware of the situation, where he notified users late last week that the Internet search giant has “found the sign in bug and have come up with a fix. We are testing it and will publish an update as soon as we can,” he wrote in an associated Google forum thread. “Sorry about this and thanks for your patience.”
However, it was somewhat a premature statement as Paquet made another appearance on the support forum and stated: “Our last update of this week had a bug that caused the app to crash at sign in,” he said. “We have removed the app from the App store so it does not impact additional users until the fix gets published. We will have a new one ASAP.”
Google did not disclosed any specific time-frame or date as to when the Voice app would be up on the App Store, but this being Google, do not expect it to be too long. If you have already registered your number, the app should work as normal if you have already installed, though you would not be able to start new text threads or make outgoing calls using your Google Voice number.
Google Voice is a free app that enables you to search by speaking into your phone, finding places near you, bringing up web pages as you mutter them, and lets you search contacts by saying their names. Google Voice for iOS was released in the App Store in November of 2010, just a little more than one year after the first Google Voice app submission was outright rejected by Apple — the company did not want apps on its iPhone that mimicked one of the device’s core functionalities. In this case, dialing.
Furthermore, Google said any multimedia attachments will display on their mobile forwarding phone and in their email inbox when they activate text-to-email forwarding in their Google Voice settings. The company will also make the photos display in users’ Google Voice inbox.
