August 6, 2009 0

New York — Barely a week ago search engine titan Google bundled its Maps service with super zoom navigation, and now Google Maps is delivering another impressive online experiences for fans and travelers alike, has added additional local landmarks and “prominent” businesses right on top of any map area you are browsing.

In the past if you were wandering into a foreign land and are not sure where to go, you were simply left to heed the words of a guidebook. Now Google Maps has changed all that, packing the service with even more reasons never to visit MapQuest again.

Now, it has become much easy for people who would like to search a particular area, you will see restaurants, hotels, historical sites, etc. marked on the map. The more you zoom in, the more you see.

A post on the LatLong Blog states, “We have now added icons and labels of prominent businesses and places of interest directly on the map itself.” So if you are looking at a map of your hometown, you might be able to determine the purpose of those mysterious buildings that never put up signs.

Or, if you are traveling, a quick glance at Google Maps may tell you what sort of restaurant options an area presents.

Now, when you zoom in on a major city, you will notice new etches on the canvas. Some of them are coffee shops, major retail chains, historical monuments, and state parks.

And what is more, according to the official post, just like any other points of interest, you can click on any of these icons to get a summary of what this place is about and explore more by choosing more info to see business info, reviews, photos, Wikipedia articles, and a lot of other local information.

This service is excellent for discovering new haunts, whether you are visiting or have planted into a lease. Google will undoubtedly add more landmarks to more cities as time goes on.

One important thing to note is that these new labels are not ubiquitous within Google Maps, or at least, Google’s definitions of “prominent” and “interest” have left some areas as blank as ever.

Also noteworthy is that the new mapping tiles do not yet appear on mobile devices like the Google Maps apps for iPhone and Android.
