GOOGLE GOOGLING A TABLET OF ITS OWN?

December 22, 2011 0

Google has never hesitated from launching a new service or product, but at the same time, it has always left the techies with a bit of confusion and a number of questions. The recent to the addition is a rumor that the search engine giant is working out ways to come up with a tablet of its own. Eric Schmidt told “Il capo di Google”, told an Italian newspaper this week the company would start marketing a new tablet computer in the next six months. To be specific, he termed things as the company would start ‘marketing’ a new tablet.

News making rounds is that Google will make a tablet of its own, without the base of any other manufacturer. Of course if that is true, then Motorola’s base would be exploited to the best potentials. But the possibility even cries out loud that Google will help market the ‘Nexus’ brand of its other manufacturing partners.

However, looking at things from the former point of view, it was noted that Google’s executive chairman told Corriere della Sea, that the tablet would be of the “highest quality.”

Alex Spektor, an analyst at technology research firm Strategy Analytics said, “The idea with the Nexus branded products is to show the full capabilities of the latest version of Android.” He added, “It shows licensees what the ideal Google device experience is like, and to show consumers what the product can do.”

On the competitive front, the analyst’s expectation is that this tablet (if its in the real making), could be a lot different from Apple’s iPad, especially there would be a higher display resolution and a more powerful processor. But as compared to the other Android-powered giants, like Samsung and HTC, it wouldn’t really work on fighting for a spot.

The main motive would currently be only to increase the Android consumption in the tablet market share. Spektor said, “Google needs to be careful not to compete on volume and profit with its licensees.”

The topic had others sharing their views too. IDC analyst Tom Mainelli, however presented the other part of the story. He disagreed, saying that Google needs a big-selling tablet, since it doesn’t get credit for the first runaway hit Android tablet. For the same, he specified the Amazon Kindle Fire, which runs a customized version of Android. That can be difficult for Google to get things back in control.

“Google completely lost control of the Amazon and Barnes & Noble products,” he said. “Those both run Android, but the average user would never know it.”

Google knows that its operating system is in control of the smartphone world, but the tablet market share shows a completely different story.

Mainelli said, “No one’s really buying Android tablets anyway.” He concluded noting, “I don’t think anyone would blame them if they tried to get some traction with a Google-branded media tablet in 2012.”
