Google Experimenting Infinite Scrolling Speeds Search Activity

August 19, 2011 0

Mountain View, California — Ranking on first-page of Google’s search results has long been considered the only aspiration of organic search success. But the web is swirling with rumors that Google has already set the machinery in motion and is testing out infinite scrolling on its search page, making it possible for every search result to be on your first page, a move that could boost sites currently ranking on the second and third pages of Google’s search results.

According to WebProNews, Google is quietly evaluating an infinite scroll for web search that could improve usability and see all Google search results returned on a single page. Google appears to have a project under the way that will make searching for content easier by removing the need to jump from page to page for search results.

Google has already announced that it is energizing its image search results with infinite search and now it looks to be experimenting on the main search page as well. It looks to be very similar to the video below, so Google may be rolling out the feature system-wide relatively soon. A Google spokesperson has confirmed the testing to Search Engine Land saying, “Google is constantly experimenting with new features.”

The new pagination process has been spotted by a few people including Simply Zesty’s Niall Harbison. The new concept allows you to simply click a ‘show more’ button at the bottom of the search results to get an infinitely scrolling list of results.

Interestingly, the move emerged about after a previous denial in November last year, citing it as a Chrome extension instead. However, in the video that you can view below, Google has decided that the pagination attribute located at the bottom, which says, “Gooooogle” will hold a link that reads “Show more results”. When you click on that, it will load an another set of search results located right below the first set of results. Hence, infinite scroll web search results.

According to tech pundits at the web news portal earlier deliberated that Google would adopt infinite scrolling as standard, after successfully rolling out a single-page scrolling search on Google Images.

And their notion seems well placed as Barry Schwartz of SearchEngine Land today shared a leaked screenshot and video of the new design in action.

Schwartz explained that Google replaced its bottom-page pagination feature with a link reading “show more results”, which, when clicked, loads additional results below the first set.

Once active, the new search function could present new opportunities for businesses drive traffic to published content on their websites, as the feature will allow users to search for results more quickly than with the current pagination setup. Besides, marketers should also be aware of the potential Search Engine Optimization significance of this feature, as it may ultimately reduce the difference in visibility between page one content and other results. You can see the new method demonstrated in this video from French blog Waebo:
