Google+, the new social network on the block, is trying to make relationships on its network as real-life as possible. Just as we ignore anyone who we don’t like, Google+ , on Friday, extended this ‘ability to ignore’ on its network.
In a Google+ post, Google’s Olga Wichrowska said, “Ignoring someone is basically saying you are just not interested. May be you don’t know them or you don’t want to see what they are sharing.”
When you ignore someone three things happen:
-
It will remove their post from your ‘incoming’ stream.
-
You will no longer get notifications about their activity.
-
You will remove them from your Circles page.
To ignore someone, you can do any one of the following:
-
From the Notifications in the Google+ bar or the Notifications stream, click ignore next to their name and you will get a confirmation message that the person has been ignored.
-
From the Incoming stream, click ignore next to their name and you will see a confirmation message.
-
From the Circles page. You can ignore one or more than one person simultaneously. Just highlight them and click ignore.
The most important thing is that Google does not notify people that they have been ‘ignored.’
If you want to un-ignore some one then you need to simply find the list of people you have ignored under More Actions on the Circles page and un-ignore them. You can also un-ignore by adding people back to a circle.
Ignoring is different from blocking in that, a person can still see your stream and comments even if you have ignored them.
When you do not want to have anything to do with somebody on Google+, then you can Block them. Though this feature was always available on Google+, it has now been modified.
When you block someone on Google+:
-
they are removed from your circles and your extended circles.
-
You won’t see any of their new posts in the stream.
-
They won’t see anything that you share on your Circles.
-
They can’t comment on your posts.
This is what you can do to block a person:
-
Go to their profile. Block them, Confirm and they are blocked.
-
Go to the Notifications widget. Click on your notification, click Ignore and you have a second option to Block them.
Again, Google does not inform the person that you have blocked them.
If you have changed your mind and want to unblock them, you can unblock them directly from their profile, from your Circles page or under the More Actions you can view the list of blocked people and unblock them.
Google’s act of introducing Ignore and improving Block seems to be an initiative to give users more control over their profiles and data. Recently, rival social media network, Facebook too overhauled its privacy features in an attempt to give users more control.
