GMAIL AN iOS DISASTER, YET AGAIN?

November 3, 2011 0

Google admitted yet again that it failed to come up with a perfectly working iOS Gmail app. Lost of words, Google tweeted with a simple response, which read, “we messed up”. The expectations were high this time as even MG Seigler, former TechCrunch writer had displayed his excitement for the iOS Gmail app. Everyone was of the thought that finally one would get the much-awaited Gmail app in their iPhones. But the dreams were shattered with Google’s unexpected tweet.

Google, on its Gmail blog had trumpeted the launch of the Gmail iOS app. Google had boasted that the app would be a multi-tool for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The official Gmail blog, noted that the app “combines your favorite features from Gmail mobile web app and iOS into one app so you can be more productive on the go.” The search engine giant had launched a new Gmail app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, only to find out later that it was a hyped app, which failed miserably. The bug had Google only apologizing for the same.

The future looks bleak as of now, but it was noted that once the bug is fixed, the app would look like it is being shown in the image below.

Talking about the tweet from Google and other noticeable users, there were only disappointments, universally. The tweeter responses were compiled by webpronews, which can be viewed in here. A few expert views on the same had Sarah Perez of Tech Crunch writing that it is “unusable.” She said, “It doesn’t even launch properly, displaying an error message upon startup.”

The biggest disappointment noted was ‘push notifications’. The reason for the same is that a Gmail user, using an iOS device would want to make through use of push notifications. This is in the case a user is running Gmail from the web or from Apple’s native Gmail client.

The update from Google read:

Update: 11/2/11: Earlier today we launched a new Gmail app for iOS. Unfortunately, it contained a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app. We’ve removed the app while we correct the problem, and we’re working to bring you a new version soon. Everyone who’s already installed the app can continue to use it.

The bug, is being worked on, but since the Gmail iOS app had affected the notifications, one might fear that it can have a long lasting effect. Google and Google users might be surprised as the search engine giant hasn’t had many high-profile flubs like this—until now.

Google has displayed its efforts on working on the iOS 5, since the time it has rolled out. Earlier, along with the Gmail app, Google had even a goof-up with the Google+ app for the ios5 platform, which left users frustrated.
