Los Angeles — The most admired photo sharing site Flickr initially released its indigenous iPhone app in September 2009. The recent iPhone 4 and iOS 4 update, which that has proven to be exceptionally useful for people who share their photos online, is now available on iTunes and takes advantage of new iOS 4 multitasking feature and will allow users to upload HD video direct to the site.
First, is the support for multitasking. According to the update info in the App’s description page, multitasking facilitates photo and video uploads in the background rather than keep the iPhone engaged until the task is completed. A badge on the app icon indicates how many uploads are processing. Fast app swapping indicates that every time you open Flickr, the app will remember exactly where you left off last time the app was used, and you can carry-on the task from where you left it.
Moreover, iPhone 4 owners who enjoy recording 720p video on their devices, will be happy to know that they can now upload HD video. Unfortunately, currently the app does not extend support for the Apple retina display or support iPad’s XGA resolution, but hopefully, Flickr will add high-resolution support in the next update.
With the iPhone 4’s 5-megapixel camera and iOS 4’s background uploading capabilities, users are more influenced than ever to shoot away and share their iPhone photos and videos on sites like Flickr and Facebook.
Aside from these improvements, the free app that integrates with Flickr makes it effortless to upload images from anywhere with your mobile device, and makes it possible to geo-tag photos using the iPhone built-in GPS. Images from anywhere can be searched and browsed, as well as photos uploaded by family, friends and other contacts. Videos and photos are organized into sets and tagged to help others find the content.
Another new feature compliments is the ability to post photos to Twitter using a flic.kr short URL directly from the app, though it is only an option when you are uploading a new photo from your device. Flickr is also touting improved full-screen image browsing behavior and one added privacy function. Recent searches can now be cleared from the app.
The Flickr app is the recent to take advantage of these new technologies. Using the Flickr app is a huge enhancement over emailing photos and browsing content from the site on Mobile Safari. All that is required is a Yahoo! account ID to start sharing photos on your own Flickr page. As always, Flickr is free to download and install from the App Store.
Other notable features in the new release includes a flic.kr short URL, the ability to clear recent searches and what Yahoo calls, enhanced full-screen browsing behavior. Also, the Flickr app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or higher.
The latest update, version 1.2, which is now available for download here, also extended the ability to post pictures to Twitter directly from the app, making it a competitor to the Twitter’s own app and Twitpic.
