FACEBOOK + U.S. GOVERNMENT = EMPLOYMENT?

October 24, 2011 0

Facebook seems busy solving its own problems these days. Maybe the best bet for Facebook, to keep troubles at bay, is to partner the U.S. Government. The social networking giant has teamed up with the U.S. Department of Labor, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), DirectEmployers Association (DE), and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA).

The five groups have planned that they would be coming up with a job solution, to curb unemployment in the U.S. They have committed jointly to create the Social Jobs Partnership, aiming the partnership to facilitate employment for America’s jobless.

The move might help Facebook majorly, as it would get deeper access to connections in the U.S. and at the same time might get a few exemptions from the U.S. Government, in some way or the other. The bet is a safe one from Facebook.

However, the collaboration would prove to be good for the U.S. departments too, as NACE has surveyed that over 70 percent of college career centers have a Facebook Page. Moreover, Jobvite had a poll conducted in 2010, wherein they came to know that of the college career centers on Facebook, 92 percent of respondents have recruited or plan to recruit via social networks. Basically, the partnership would let users know that the recruiters are on the social networks and they can use the option to get recruited.

They have even planned to pursue many initiatives, which is specifically designed to be an effective tool to leverage Facebook in the job market. For the same, one can follow the following steps:

  • Launch a central Facebook Page at facebook.com/socialjobs that hosts resources and content designed to help job seekers and employers. Facebook will launch public service announcements on Facebook to promote the Page in the 10 states with the highest unemployment rate, as well as Puerto Rico, which has an unemployment rate of 16 percent.

  • Conduct an in-depth survey research about the ways in which job seekers, college career centers, and workforce recruiters are using the social web.

  • Explore and develop systems where new job postings can be delivered virally through Facebook at no charge.

  • Promote existing government programs and resources for job hunters.

  • Distribute educational materials about leveraging the power of the social web to recruiters, government agencies, and job seekers.

Facebook even was optimistic about the partnership as Marne Levine, Facebook vice president of Global Public Policy, stated that the partnership would initiate some real opportunities. He said, “Facebook is about connecting people so that they can share what’s important to them, and that is the driving force behind the Social Jobs Partnership.” He continued noting, “We’ve brought employers, recruiters, college career services and government agencies together to help the millions of Americans who use Facebook find jobs.”

The U.S. department representatives even should positive signs, and were hopeful that the partnership would help reduce unemployment. US Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis stated, “Linking American job seekers with the resources they need to get back to work is a top priority of the Obama Administration and my department.” He concluded saying, “By leveraging the power of the social web, this initiative will provide immediate, meaningful and ready-to-use information for job seekers and employers, and a modern platform to better connect them.”

Facebook till now has got many scrapped of their jobs, because of the posts they made on their personal profile. It would be interesting to see, as to how do they generate employment, partnering the U.S. Government.
