FACEBOOK “TIMELINE”D

September 23, 2011 0

Facebook had its f8 conference yesterday, wherein it was confirmed that the Facebook user count was more than 800 million now. The conference even had an important update, which was the introduction of Timeline. As the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg puts it, Timeline is the story of your life.

Moving out of the restrictive wall posts, Facebook has this new feature, called ‘Timeline’, which would have ’15 minutes of your story’. For the lingering thoughts, ‘Timeline’ feature is as the name suggests, it would let you see which would be threaded all the way from the day one had joined Facebook. This would contain, photos and other related updates. There is even a quickie way for one who is interested in viewing the most treasured updates related to a specific year, as Facebook has an option to let a viewer click back to any year where there are updates and see what was going on.

The selection made is on an automatic basis usually, for the most important updates which is highlighted with a blue dot. The not-so-important updates are highlighted with a gray dot, representing hidden updates. The users still have an option to customize their Timeline, by removing certain updates or highlighting others that might be important to them.

Facebook users will see Timeline being rolled out publicly in the weeks to come, but for the developers, they can sign up now for early access. Here is how the instructions were provided:

  1. Visit the Facebook Developer page and enable it for your account.

  2. Click the ‘Create New App’ button on the top right. On the New App prompt window, give your app a display name and name space — any name, it doesn’t matter. Agree to the Platform Privacy Policy and click Continue. You will need a verified Facebook account so make sure you have either a credit card or phone number on file.

  3. After clearing the CAPTCHA verification you will then be taken to your new apps’ settings screen (if Facebook doesn’t put you there automatically hit the Edit App button on the top right). Next, click on Open Graph link in the left column and define an action for your new app on the right pane. You can enter whatever you like; I wrote watch on the first field and chose video from the drop-down menu on the next one. Click “Get Started.”

Once this is done, one might see an error noting that something went wrong. This error is to ignored and directly move on to their Facebook homepage, where they would see an invitation to the new Facebook Timeline Beta. Next one can take a short tour of the new timeline view and if required, they can start editing their profile until they are ready to publish it.

For its compatibility, the old Facebook would not support the timeline functionality. However, Facebook would be rolling out the new page, once the update is out for everyone in the coming weeks.

One can view a video detailing the flow of the Timeline feature below:
