During a presentation at a press event held Wednesday evening in San Francisco, Carl Sjogreen, a director of product management at Facebook, said:
“The apps launched at f8 in the music, news and video verticals have seen tremendous success so far. But really, that was just the tip of the iceberg. Our vision for Timeline is that whatever you love, whatever story you want to tell, you can add to your platform.”
A number of categories are covered in these new apps, which include travel, food and fashion and fitness. Their partners include Pinterest, Foodspotting, TripAdvisor and others. One can check out the list of apps Facebook released Wednesday night, with more on the way. The listing was done by Masbable, a link to the same is here.
It seems like it would never want to stop, as the social network announced, “If you’re into reading a book, or running, or knitting … the sky’s the limit.”
The Developers blog even had a blog post, wherein Facebook’s Eddie O’Neill wrote, “Starting today, developers can build apps that let people add anything they love to their Timelines – whether it is eating, traveling, shopping, running or taking pictures.” He continues, “The apps launching today are just starting to demonstrate the types of self-expression that are possible with the Open Graph. There are many more stories to tell and great apps to tell them. Get started today!”
For those developers, who are still new to the Timeline app making, the Facebook Developers blog has a tutorial posted to help users get started with the new apps.
However, for Facebook users and developers, the most interesting part is that Timeline is truly open to accepting apps from developers big and small.
Facebook’s Open Graph was first unveiled at F8 2011 last fall, but now it is finally available for developers. This is indeed an opportunity for brands and marketers to engage users.
Facebook is marching ahead with Timeline, which will be an additional effort to keep people on Facebook and switch over to Timeline profiles.
The announcement even noted that the app content would show up on the Timeline in three different places, that is at the end of each Timeline section. The social networking giant would even summarize one’s app activity for the month.
There is a part detailing for users on the main Facebook blog, related to the new app. It notes that these apps will be released over time and explains, “You choose when to add an app, and you decide who can see it. After you’ve added an app, you can always remove posts directly from Timeline, and you can also edit your settings from your personal Activity Log.”
