Clash of search engine Titans- Facebook vs Google

April 3, 2012 0

Google and Facebook have been hiking on remarkably parallel paths. Facebook plans to come up with a search engine that could give a big blow to Google. The two most popular services engines in the world are about to take competition to a whole new level in the next few weeks.

Google raised $1.7 billion with its initial public contribution in August 2004. Facebook, born in 2004, will make that dollar amount and a lot more in May when it, too, goes public at age 8, according to eWeek, Facebook has declared that it will generate $5 billion which could be the largest public offering ever made. Gaint search engine, Google, caters for about 80% of the world’s search queries. Facebook holds the popular social networking site, which claims about 20% of internet page views, according to industry researcher Hitwise.

Both are hugely profitable because they attract some of the largest numbers of interactive users and active advertisers on the Internet on a everyday basis. So, if it comes out with its new search functionality (which is being worked upon), Facebook will move to a whole new major league of international corporations. How does Facebook plan to do this? The answer is simple– by hiring the best in industry.

Atleast 24 Facebook engineers led by at least 24 Facebook engineers led by former Google engineer Lars Rasmussen (former Google Engineer- Google maps) are revamping Facebook search engine. The company endeavours to provide an easier way to search status updates, articles and videos. Google, on the other hand, is trying to integrate Google+ with their search engine.

But since all systems come with pitfalls, the main problem Facebook is currently facing is the fact that the privacy settings of users allow them to integrate only those results that a user has set for public viewing. On the other hand, the problem Google has to deal with is the fact that their social site, Google+ is certainly not as popular as Facebook

Only time will tell who will emerge as a winner and gain supremity in this game of upmanship…
