ANDROID POWERED TV MANUFACTURERS CAN LEAD GOOGLE TV TO SUCCESS?

January 10, 2012 0

Google has seen efforts from a number of TV manufacturers, who have shown interest in coming up with a Google TV, under their brand names. It seems like finally Eric Schmidt’s dream of Google TV taking over consumers’ living rooms is inching closer. The recently added to the ascending list of TV manufacturers, was LG, who showed off its first Google TV product that marries LG’s advanced TV functionality with Google’s Android OS.

This TV would feature CINEMA 3D technology that works with passive 3D glasses and integration with LG’s Magic Remote Qwerty. This will allow users to control their TV with motion gestures, voice recognition and full keyboard input.

Surprisingly, the TV manufacturer is yet to unwrap the name of this set, possible sizes, price and the launch date. But there was a commercial already for the same, which is posted below:

Meanwhile, another South Korean giant, Samsung, has plans to launch a Web-connected TV using Android in the second half of this year targeting high-end customers in the U.S. It is likely to help broaden the appeal of its line-up and help combat falling set prices.

Yoon Boo-keun, president of Samsung’s consumer electronics division said, “Last year, brisk sales of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, adversely affected TV demand, but this year, those products will create synergies with smart TVs.”

Samsung’s offering seems to be unrestrictive, as the South Korean Electronics Giant has plans to offer a kit for Smart TVs that users can buy to automatically upgrade their TVs with new software content and services from 2013.

There was a thought on the same from Yoon, as he noted that the price gap between Smart TVs and regular TV is huge, ranging from $300 to $500. For the same, he said, “Even if the economy faces a slowdown, we will continue to drive sales in premium markets.”

but the show maker was Sony, as the company was one of the few early supporters of the Google TV platform. At the CES 2012, they have just extended their support for the platform, as they have come up with two new home theater products.

One of them was an upgraded version of its earlier make, Google TV-powered Blu-ray player, the NSZ-GP9. But the other model revealed here was which had many visitors making notes of its specs. Sony’s first-ever Google TV set-top box, the NSZ-GS7 was catchy for the visitors. However, both products will feature all of the improvements made in the most recent Google TV update, including access to apps in the Android Market.

The most interesting of all, definitely is the new touch-pad remote, which supports gestures via three-axis motion control. An image of the same, can be seen below. The Japanese Electronic giant has even touted voice search on the NSZ-GP9’s remote, but there is no clear thought that one would see the same in the set-top box.
