Twitter Gobbles Social Media Feed-Aggregation Startup Summify

New York — Continuing strong on its recent acquisition spree, microblogging outfit Twitter continues to beef up its arsenal of solutions while consolidating any type of competition with the acquisition of Summify, a startup based in Vancouver that summarizes content in people’s Google, Facebook and Twitter social media feeds and delivers a daily digest via email, on a website or to a user’s iPhone, the company disclosed Thursday.

The service functions by monitoring how many times your friends are sharing items on Twitter, Facebook, and Google Reader, as well as collects news stories that are being shared on your social networks and puts them into a daily summary.

“We are thrilled that Summify has joined Twitter,” a Twitter spokesperson said. “Cristian Strat and Mircea Pasoi have developed a product that curates the best and most important messages in your Twitter timeline and Facebook newsfeed. Cristian, Mircea and their team of three engineers will join our Growth team and explore ways to help people connect and engage with relevant, timely news.”

“Our long-term vision at Summify has always been to connect people with the most relevant news for them, in the most time efficient manner,” Summify wrote in a blog post. “As hundreds of millions of people worldwide are signing up and consuming Twitter, we realized it is the best platform to execute our vision at a truly global scale.”

Since Twitter holds similar vision with us, joining the company made perfect sense. As a result of the Twitter acquisition, Summify has discontinued accepting new account sign-ups and eliminated several features. It will eventually shut down its service completely.

Although Summify will be booting out its profile and influence pages effectively immediately, but it will still retain private summaries intact. However, public summaries will also be getting the boot.

“We are offering a more streamlined service as we transition our efforts to working at Twitter,” the company noted on its blog.

However, Twitter did not disclosed how exactly Summify’s consolidation would impact the microblogging outfit. But, Twitter rep Carolyn Penner told Mashable that it “will help people connect and engage with relevant, timely news.”

Summify–originally established in Romania by two entrepreneurs, the Vancouver-based startup has a platform that produces a daily summary of what is deemed the most relevant news from your social media networks, and then it delivers the aggregated news together to you via e-mail or mobile.

Financial terms of the Summify deal have not been disclosed. However, the Summify group will be shifting to Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco.
