FACEBOOK FOR ANDROID OVERTAKES ITS IPHONE COUNT

December 19, 2011 0

Facebook for Android passes its iOS counterpart , in the daily usage count. Yet another victory for Android users over Apple, if you call it a war!

Android and Apple love fighting for supremacy, but this time its Facebook, who has unintentionally

sparked the same between the two.

Noting the latest stats from the independent app measuring service AppData, finally the Android version of Facebook’s app has overtook its iPhone version for daily active users. But as far as the monthly activeness is concerned, Facebook for iPhone is still above the Android app usage.

This might confuse a few, noting that if the Android Facebook app is ahead of the iPhone app in terms of daily active usage, then how come it lags behind in the monthly activeness. Yes, these are two different things. Basically, these two measurements are exactly like what they are named. Daily active users, or DAUs, relates to how many individuals open up an app on a daily basis. An app’s monthly active user (MAU) count takes a step back to give a clearer picture of an app’s overall growth patterns.

Framing the same, here is an example. If an app grows consistently, the MAU steeps upwards, which is helped in process by the growing DAU. This indicates that more of the app’s users are being hooked into coming back on a daily basis. If the MAU and DAU keep rising consistently, it can be understood that more users are finding and engaging with the app. On the other hand, if the MAU is constant, but DAU is on the lower side, it means that the the app is facing a decline in interest. This results in a lower MAU in subsequent months only.

The link between DAU and MAU of an app, is usually a sticky issue. AppData noted, ‘Facebook’s Android and iPhone versions are both steadily increasing in their DAU and MAU counts.’ the ratio of DAU-to-MAU, is what one should note and in that case, the lead now is with Android. An average Android user access the Facebook app for around 68 percent of the days withing a given particular month. The ratio notes a poor ratio of an iPhone Facebook app, which records only 58 percent.

The exact figures noted by AppData are noted below:

  • iPhone leads the Facebook MAU count with 99.5 million users versus Facebook for Android’s 86.1 million.

  • Where Facebook DAU is concerned, Android has taken the unexpected lead as its daily user figures stand at 58.8 million to Facebook for iPhone’s 57.6 million.

Interesting to note here is that the Facebook for iPhone came to the Android Market in September 2009, whereas the iPhone Facebook app hit the App Store in July 2008. This must have given the iPhone users considerable time to record success for months to come. But Android sales are helping its share grow.

Facebook is more like a ‘must-have’ app nowadays and a number of smartphone manufacturers are integrating the Facebook app on their smartphones, which are powered by Android.

However, iPhone in this case will have to fight with a number of smartphones, it it wants to retain the Facebook DAU and to keep its top position as far as the Facebook MAU is concerned. Again, it even depends on the number of smartphone sales, which take place every year and the iPhone share in it.
