Google Plus might have limited number of users and that too not very regular, but it still has a lot to boast about its new social networking site. Google’s head of social Vic Gundotra, had a figure, huge enough to reveal at the annual Web 2.0 Summit. He said that their social networking site has seen photo uploads of 3.4 billion in just 100 days. It seems to be more than just an achievement for a social networking site, which is not the most active social networking site.
The image uploads on the site has been a mix of Picasa, Android uploads and people just sharing images via the website.
Talking about the social networking giant, Facebook, the site records over six billion photo uploads every month. On an approximation, the site has almost 100 billion photos stored at its server. With this, Facebook is the largest image sharing platform in the world. One cannot compare a newbie Google Plus to Facebook, which has more than 800 million users, out of which a great number of users are active. Google noted that the site is now in with more than 40 million members, but had no disclosure as to how many of them were really active.
Talking about surprises, the conference had Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founder, making an appearance, which was not expected by many. He even said that there was room for both Facebook and Google+.
He made a few notable points in there and in response to a question posed by The Daily Telegraph, Brin said, “I have seen multiple social networks co-exist.” He continued saying, “Historically I have seen people use lots of services at the same time. So yes you have to offer to something of value. If it’s identical to what someone else is offering and that network is richer – then its’ [your product] not going to be successful, but if you offer people something of value then I do think it will work.
Gundotra termed Facebook as incumbent, as he said that the social networking giant enjoys a huge advantage, but he noted that they have adopted a different approach to the social networking game. He said, “if you play the same game then that’s a hard game to win. We are playing a different game [to Facebook].” He continued saying, “Your friends, mother and cousins are already on Google – they use it all the time. But we have never given them a reason to express their identity and relationships before. And we are going to do that [with Google +].”
The Social Head was confident of the success of Google Plus as he noted that the search engine giant was in a position, which he terms as “enviable”. He noted that Google has a number of services, running successfully and this would prove beneficial for Google Plus as it can take its own sweet time to grow.
Google has not been successful, waring against Facebook, as the preference of people has still been on the social networking giant, ever since it has come it.
