SEARCH WARS; GOOGLE STILL ON TOP WITH BING RISING

August 12, 2011 0

Search engine wars have been on for quite a few years now and here is just another update of how they have fared in the last few months. ComScore Inc, based in Virginia has carried out a research which showed that since November 2010 till July 2011, Google has lost out on a share of 1.1%. On a monthly basis, Yahoo has had a small bite of the search engine giant’s share, but looking at the whole researched period, its Microsoft’s Bing who has eaten up the 1.1% completely from Google’s cake.

In June, 2011 Google had a share of 65.5% which ended at 65.1% in July, 2011. For the same time frame, Yahoo had a jump from 15.9% to 16.1% while Microsoft was consistent at 14.4%. this gives an illusion that Google has lost a decent share to Yahoo as Microsoft has been consistent on its 14.4%. significantly, the share has gone to Yahoo in the latter stages of the research, but in looking at the result from the start, we come to know that Yahoo has even lost its share which has been eaten up by the snailing Bing.

Popularity-wise, Google has lost no real fame. For a confirmation, JPMorgan Chase & Co’s analyst, Douglas Anmuth noted that Google is a hot favorite in the academic world among the students who still rely majorly on Google.

Google on its part even has left no stone unturned to keep its most profitable source at the top. Search-based advertising is Google’s favorite sector which gets most of its revenue. There have been even a few enhancement which have added on for the search engines by Google which have had its uniqueness against its competitors. Some of the improvements were Instant Pages and Voice commands.

Instant Pages is a feature which was unveiled by Google for Chrome users. This feature would sped up the query results made by a user. This would save valuable time for a query-maker which might be minimal but significantly would be of help for the users. The search process would save 2 to 5 seconds approximately.

The other feature is Voice Commands. This feature has come via a reversal as it has been on mobile phones as a useful feature and would now even be helpful to users on PCs and laptops if they are looking out for something on Google. Requirements in this case are basic as one would only require a working microphone to speak out the search queries. This option can be activated by clicking on the microphone icon which has been placed in the search box. One can even use this option for translations.

Talking about the search wars, Google has been dropping down from its actual share since November 2010, but it hardly makes a real difference as its by far still the most popular search engine of all. Microsoft and Yahoo of late have entered into an agreement last year which was to give users a joint search for their queries. But even if the share of Microsoft and Yahoo are combined, the joint share is still not even half of the search engine giant, which still gives Google a lifeline to hunt for success in other fields too.

In the Wall Street, Google in fact has a rise of 5$ which moved it share up to $573.41, while Yahoo was down by 27%.
