Google AdWords Lets Advertisers Target Tablets Beyond iPad

San Francisco — In hot pursuit of Google IO’s Android keynote presentation, global search engine behemoth Google said it is developing new targeting options for advertisers, including a way to target tablet users.

Just as Google empowered users to separate their AdWords campaigns on smartphones from their PC campaigns, the company has now unveiled a new setting in their interface which makes a distinction between targeting ads to tablet devices and smartphones.

In a post on Google’s InsideAdwords blog, Nathania Lozada wrote, “In the next couple of weeks, the ‘Networks and Devices’ section of your Settings tab within your AdWords account will contain a new targeting option titled ‘Tablets with full browsers.'” While you have been able to specifically target Apple iPad devices in the past, the new capability will allow you to easily target your ads to the entire tablet device category.”

The new capabilities has been released to distinguishing between iOS and Android tablet devices, but initially the new tablet setting only allows you to target iPads only, but Google AdWords promises that new tablets will be available over the coming months. You can also target by mobile network operator.

Moreover, Google has introduced this system to empower you to target the maximum range of devices, by making the standard text and image ad units work instantly on every device.

“In addition, you will be able to more precisely choose the types of devices and operating systems on which your AdWords ads will show,” adds Lozada. “For instance, to display your ads on the Apple iPad, you will be able to select ‘Tablets with full browsers’ as your device targeting setting and ‘iOS’ as your operating system setting. Tablet targeting will be available initially for Apple devices only, but we will expand ad serving to other specific devices in the near future.”

Ads will automatically start running on tablet devices, once the option becomes available in advertisers’ accounts. Google warns that if you were targeting iPads before, you might start seeing more impressions and costs as they include more tablets in the serving options, so if you don’t want ads to appear on other tablets, you’ll have to go into the settings and specify this.

The full range of settings can be seen below:

  • Sign in to your AdWords account.

  • On the Campaigns tab, on either the left side or in the center of the screen, click the name of the campaign you want to change.

  • Select the Settings tab.

  • In the “Networks and devices” section, click “Edit” next to “Devices.”

  • Select “Let me choose…”

  • Check or uncheck the box next to “Tablets with full browsers.”

  • Click “Save” when you have made your selection.
