May 12, 2011 0

Mountain View, California — Looking for an image but unable to find it on Google? For people who adopt Google’s Image Search to find photos and graphics should now have an easier time zeroing in on just the right ones. The search titan is turning on a new sorting option for Google Images that lets you sort the images by subject aimed at making image searches simpler and more visual.

As search engines improve and users are starting to search for more than just text or websites, it is easy to discover the immediate benefits of having an image search which can be defined further by subject and now.

Thanks to Google, which combs through most of the available photographs and graphics on the Internet to find exactly what you want in a picture, even when you are not exactly sure what that is. Besides, the latest enhancement to the image search will help you ignore bad photographs taken by tourists and other unappealing still images.

Unveiled early this week, Google opted for London as an example to demonstrate its latest tool. “Sorting by subject shows that some of the most popular images associated with London are the London Eye, Big Ben, Tower Bridge and the city at night,” Google explained. “This organized view helps you find the images you were visualizing more quickly, so you might realize, ‘Ah, that big clock tower is called Big Ben, that is what I was looking for.’ You can then click on the Big Ben group to find the best image within that subject group.”

Another example is, if you are entrusted to prepare a presentation on Search Engine Optimization and want to know what subjects the presentation might have, you can try to search Google Images by subject sorting for [SEO] and Google will recommend subject.

As usual, many different pictures of search engine optimization will appear in the search results, and you are still not sure what you are looking for. A click on the “sort by subject” link quickly sorts out the images according to a subject — in this case it will be in different categories i.e. services, process, icons etc. (See image below and above).

A post on Google’s blog said: “You can employ this novel feature to explore categories of a general topic that may be easier to learn about visually. It can come in handy especially when you are struggling to find the right words or phrase to describe the image you are seeking. By choosing to ‘sort images by subject,’ you can use a general word or term in your query, and then let Google suggest the right images from among a list of topics.”

If the sort by subject option in not visible just as yet, hang in there: Google expects that the feature will reach all of its users by the end of the week. Until then, engross yourself with the video below, which shows the new feature in action:
