March 29, 2011 0

San Francisco — Unlike many other Facebook TV specials, which has mainly focused on some aspect of Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s meteoric rise to world domination — Now, MTV is giving viewers a front row seat as they enter the social media empire Facebook, with “Diary of Facebook,” premiering Wednesday, March 30 at 11 p.m. ET/PT., which provides an insights on the hardships and opportunities they face as they work on groundbreaking projects.

MTV has been slandered by some for their programming shift, now focuses less on music videos and more on reality programming as of late. Out of this has come a good amount of episodes that is part of MTV’s Diary series, which gives viewers an intimate view of an artist’s/cultural figure’s life, chronicling subjects such as severe wight loss, eating disorders, steroids and drug addiction in teens to name a few. The show’s tagline? “You think you know, but you have no idea.”

The latest of these mini-docs revolves around Facebook and is appropriately titled “Diary of Facebook.” This special story “days in the life” of a Facebook technical engineer “named Pedram” and a consumer marketing employee named Erin, and includes interviews with founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The 30-minute special episode will answer the questions, “What does it take to run a social-networking site that has 500 million users rely on and obsess over?” and “Who are the people working to keep your Facebook page not only up and running but constantly innovating and transforming?” according to a recent blog post by MTV.

The show will offer viewers a first-hand glance at the social media networking company and explain what really goes on in Facebook’s California headquarters. Additionally, “viewers will get the first televised look into Facebook’s famous 24-hour ‘hack-a-thon.'”

“Not only does Pedram innovate, he does so under pressure, and overnight,” writes MTV.

“In the end, viewers will walk away with an closer look at the personalities and day-to-day dealings of one of the world’s most widely-discussed companies and social platforms.”

Overall, it is an excellent opportunity for MTV to show young people driving change and contributing to the world in a meaningful way. The real question will be how realistic individuals will now find the box-office hit “The Social Network,” which showed viewers what the apparent social media Facebook headquarters looks like, as “Diary of Facebook” will now bring viewers in to the actual facility.

“Diary of Facebook” is a production of MTV News and Docs., and is exclusively produced by Dave Sirulnick and Marshall Eisen.
