August 24, 2010 0

New York — If you are an iPad developer that just cannot hold longer for iAds, and wish to get ads on your free application in a jiffy, you may be delighted to know Google’s new ad format for iPad. Internet search engine titan Google recently announced that they are releasing a new feature for its Mobile for AdSense apps, optimized for the iPad in a nod to the growing number of iPad apps as well as the growing usage the extremely popular tablet that has no true Android competitor right now, which lets developers in the U.S. and Canada, who are participating in the beta program, to monetize their iPad apps.

In a recent blog post by Google Mobile Ads, they said: It is “thrilled” to offer the new Mobile Adsense structure, offering the new features to  US and Canada based developers that are enrolled in the Mobile Adsense beta program.

“The new iOS SDK supports ad serving in iPad apps that employs three of the most common online ad layouts, Leaderboard 720×90 pixels, Banner 468×60 and Medium Rectangle 300×250. Support of these ad layouts allows developers to instantly incorporate ads into their apps,” says Dan Waylonis, Software Engineer for Google’s AdSense for Mobile Applications.

With the new feature, iPad app developers can now display Google AdSense ads directly within their application, giving them a new way to monetize their app. “Advertisers whose campaigns are displayed on the Google Display Network and include text or image ads in the specified sizes can now show ads within iPad applications — provided their campaigns are targeting mobile devices or specifically the iPad. This option will also allow developers to offer customers more free apps by making money through advertising,” the post read.

To utilize the feature, developers must be situated in the USA or Canada and sign-up to participate in Google’s AdSense for Mobile Applications beta to access the program. Once signed up, partners will have access to the ad features in the latest iOS SDK build. However, those who are not taking part can apply by signing up to become an AdSense partner or logging into their existing account, and selecting AdSense for Mobile Applications in the setup tab.

Here are the new iPad specific ad units:

AdSense is Google’s largest source of revenue and it is not surprising to see Google support the growing number of iPad developers with AdSense. Moreover, If you have ever made use of Google Adsense before, you may probably be aware that Google does not have the prettiest ads, so if you want to make sure your app is as alluring as it can be, you might just want to wait until iAds is available for iPad.

However, if you are just curious about making a couple of bucks off your free app, and you are not obsessed with its appearance, you may want to check out the new ad formats.

The recent rift between Apple and Google, after a partnership of many years, has led to competing more directly with one another. Google is pushing into the smartphone and tablet business with Android vs Apple’s iOS business. Apple in turn is going after Google’s advertising business with the recent launch of iAds for iOS devices. This is shaping up to be an epic battle, as Terrell Owens would say “get your popcorn ready!”
