San Francisco — Google’s Gmail, one of the most extensively used email in the world was down on Tuesday, 11th May 2010, Google official apologies for an 502 Server error. Perhaps this outage occurred for the first time since the service was launched in 2004. Many users were confronted with this error.

According to Web reports, Gmail crashed for a long period of time on Tuesday morning in many parts of the world. A large number of people reported that they were not able to access their gmail for quite some time. After some errors with the singup and login page of Google’s product “Gmail” or “Googlemail,” users had to wait for several minutes only to get a request by Google to retry after 30 seconds.

Each time when the users tried to log into their account on Tuesday morning they got a message that said: “The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request. Please try again in 30 seconds.” The 30 second wait proved to be several minutes or even a few hours in some cases.

Google was prompt in admitting the crash and apologized for the inconvenience suffered by users. The search engine giant stated on the Google Apps Status Dashboard that if anyone sees a temporary error 502 message it means the mail account is temporarily inaccessible.

It is reported that the outage occurred when Google ended its advertising campaign to persuade companies to leave Microsoft applications such as Outlook and Word for Google’s online Apps for Your Domain, which has Gmail as its centerpiece. This was the first significant breakdown in the mail services by Google.

Google posted that, “the problem with Google Mail should be resolved soon. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support”.
