These classics movies – all of which were made between 1990 and 2009 – were chosen based on their artistry, originality, and pure cinematic entertainment, Yahoo! said in a statement. These are the movies that molded pop culture over the past 20 years, offered the most quotable lines, and worked their way into this generation’s heart and memory.
“Twenty-one of the 100 films are foreign films,” said Yahoo Movies executive producer Sean Phillips. “Hong Kong cinema, you have got French directors, sort of everything across the board.”
Some of the movies are from way back, but some are current, and that is what creates an interesting mix of critically acclaimed features “Brokeback Mountain; “American Beauty” with movies that were more admired by the moviegoers themselves.
“One of the final movies that is on our list is “Avatar”, so I think technology has played an enormous role in movie making,” Phillips said.
The full list, compiled by Yahoo! Movies’ team of editors and experts, ranges from hit films and cult classics such as “The Dark Knight” and “Sideways” to lesser-known, critically acclaimed works such as “Old Boy” and “The Lives of Others.”
No matter where the movies were made Phillips, who helped compile the list, said they all made it for a reason. “This is the list you print, hang on your refrigerator, and slowly check off as you experience what it is that makes these films stand out.”
“The telling of a good story is very universal,” he added.
The list even makes room for comedies and animation, with lighter films such as: “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” and “WALL-E” joining more serious fare.
Moreover, international standouts also were not ignored, with foreign films like “Y Tu Mama Tambien,” “Amelie,” “Chungking’s Express” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” among the them.
With Yahoo playing a central role focusing on people’s online lives, the list is perfectly organized for Web users. It can be examined chronologically, and movies.yahoo.com offers in-depth explanation and expert opinions on many of the chosen films.
