Google Bookmarks may soon become more of a synonym in every household. However, the search engine giant has introduced a number of cool features into lists, making its bookmarking feature easy to use and a lot more useful.
Google product manager Christina Chen mentioned in a blog post that the new feature will enhance information sharing between friends or relevant groups.
“Lists help you locate new web content. For example, once you have created your list Google will algorithmically analyze your list to identify other potentially relevant links,” she said.
If you are not an active Google Bookmarks user already, you can begin by using the service by organizing and sharing a few bookmarks into lists and, more essentially import bookmarks from a friend’s or public list.
Users can also add websites to a list under a particular heading, and then share it openly for anyone to view or allow access to users with invitation-only. The new feature also produces a smaller image of the site prior to anything is selected, giving users an opportunity to be aware of what they are clicking on.
Some excellent new feature is the power to add items to your lists without having to leave the Bookmarks Lists interface. When you perform a Google search, you will notice a star icon next to each result. Clicking this star will automatically add the link to your bookmarks, whether it is a location or a website.
Google has provided a convenient tool for including more links to your lists. By selecting the “Add Stuff” button, you can enter a keyword or even section of a URL, and if you could not remember a specific site, then Google will suggest websites based on your query.
Other improvements include the capability to arrange the lists through a simple drag and drop interface, the ability to make a remark on any section in a list and to screen videos, maps and Wikipedia content directly in the Google Bookmarks interface. Or, you can use the “More” button to search specifically for videos, images, results in your geography and even items from your Google Docs.
“Similarly, when we discover that a list is related to a specific region, we provide a map of those places and relevant info for each place, such as addresses, hours and reviews,” Chen wrote in a blog.
Furthermore, if your bookmarks are stored on another site or are saved on a browser, you can import these in a few simple steps. First, export your bookmarks as an HTML file. You can import these bookmarks to Firefox, then use the Google Toolbar to import them to Google Bookmarks. You can find more information on importing bookmarks here.
Lists in Google Bookmarks is currently being launched as an experimental feature, and Google is looking for feedback.
