Sunnyvale, California — Yahoo! Mail users now have a reason to be joyous as the Sunnyvale, California, company on Thursday announced a partnership with social-storage service Dropio, which allows Yahoo Mail users to attach large files up to 100MB in size to any message they send using drop.io’s Attach Large Files application.
When Yahoo Mail users log on to their accounts, a new application will now be visible called “Dropio’s Attach Large Files” listing included in the Applications drop-down box, which also features apps from Evite, Flickr, and PayPal, among others.
Simply select “Attach Large Files” heading in your Applications listing, and immediately start sending large files.
Dropio has made its way to Yahoo Mail.
The novel thing about drop.io is that all your files are safely stacked away on their cloud, so your recipients would be able to see what files you have sent and either download them individually or all at once. You can send as many files as you want per up to 100MB per message.
Yahoo said people can now “do more, share more, and stay better connected from their inbox.” The company also said that the new improvements that they have made to Yahoo Mail are a “key milestone” to the Yahoo Open Strategy, which extends social and open features.
The Dropio application is available only when a user is in Yahoo Mail’s e-mail composition mode. Now, only when the user selects the “Attach Large Files” option they will be able to view a Dropio selection page allowing them to choose files from their computer. Once they picks up all those files, they can then transfer them and compose an e-mail message. The message contains a note at the bottom saying the attachment technology is “powered by Dropio.”
Nevertheless, from a development point of view, the Attach Large Files app is pretty fascinating because it was developed entirely on top of the drop.io open API. The company wanted to demonstrate the potential of the API and no better way to do that than build an easy-attachment app onto a huge webmail platform like Yahoo! Mail.
Incorporating the Dropio technology marks an improvement for Yahoo. Currently, users of Google’s Yahoo Mail rival, Gmail, can attach up to 25MB to their messages. By effectively multiplying that figure through Dropio’s app, Yahoo Mail has another compelling feature to communicate to users. It expects that the Yahoo Mail feature will be used as a proof of concept for other developers to find unique ways to use its API.
Dropio’s Attach Large Files application is available now for free in the Yahoo Mail Applications listing.
