Google Details AdWords Display URL Policy

February 25, 2009 0

New York — Attempting to offer more relevant results in search engine queries, the Google AdWords blog last week announced a change to their AdWords display URL policy, which will be effective February 24th onwards! The new policy that was confirmed by an official Google representative in WebmasterWorld, disallows multiple display URL domains within a single ad group, according to Emel Mutlu.

In an effort to provide more relevant results and a high quality experience for our users, we’ve made the decision to disallow multiple display URL domains within a single ad group. Going forward, all display URLs within an ad group must have the same top-level domain. Please note that this amendment to our policy applies to all advertisers, regardless of previous exceptions or acceptability of any ad groups.

Examples of compliant URLs:
www.yoursite.com
subdomain.yoursite.com
yoursite.com/directory

Examples of non-compliant URLs:
www.yoursite.com
www.someotherdomain.com
yoursite.yourothersite.com

Providing examples of what these changes means for you, Mutlu encourages AdWords users to carry out necessary adjustments to ads in advance of the change as a result of the update. The change applies to all AdWords advertisers.

Mutlu of Google writes:

While we understand there are legitimate use-cases for multiple display URL domains within one ad group, we ask that you use separate ad groups for each domain. This will not only provide a better user experience for your potential customers, but will also allow you to better organize and track the various domains within your AdWords account.
