AOL Introduces “Digital City” A Magazine-Style Website

September 30, 2008 0

New York — AOL has launched Digital City, a novel, magazine-style website that aims at entertainment enthusiasts and readers who are interested in “stories from around the world,” the company said. According to a company press release the website derives its name from a very vintage AOL brand, as “a new approach to geo-blogging by displaying original content with a local slant, but global appeal.”

“A new look from lifestyle to entertainment, DigitalCity.com encompasses local trends with a global appeal.”

Put differently, it boasts about nightclubs in Vegas, concerts in Portland, and New York vs. Boston rivalries that are written so that you do not have to actually live in one of those cities to get what is going on. Besides the daily announcements on subjects ranging from the arts to fall festivities, Digital City has weekly features focusing on news and trends in entertainment, concerts, nightlife and dining. The monthly blogazine “Drink World” is devoted to the global culture of drinking.

“We are excited to launch Digital City and to continue our legacy of providing consumers with compelling local entertainment information,” said Chris Spanos, General Manager of AOL Local. “From the serious to the irreverent, Digital City is sure to inform and entertain readers.”

The Digital City website will be part of the AOL Local Network, which covers the largest online local network with a monthly reach of 60 million unduplicated unique visitors, according to comScore. The site will be monetized through advertising packages that will be sold exclusively through AOL’s digital advertising arm, Platform-A.
