August 29, 2008 0

Mumbai — Have you ever questioned why various regions of the world do not have great maps and thought how nice it would be if they did? Internet search engine giant Google on Wednesday took steps to organize the world’s map with the launch of its new mapping tool called Google Map Maker in India.

The application, a Google Maps service, which was conceived and developed by its Indian engineering team, allows users to contribute, edit maps data for geographical locations around the world and make the content available online immediately to other users.

Understanding that people know their neighborhoods bets, Google Map Maker empowers this user-expertise to improve the breadth and depth of available mapping data.

Using Google Map Maker tools, enables users to look closely to add or edit mapping data and moderate most attributes you see on maps including roads, lakes, parks, points of interest, businesses, cities, localities and more.

After the information is submitted, it will be available at the Map Maker sites for other users to edit it and you could expect to see it live in Google Maps when Google decides there is enough information. Users will then be able to map out many of these features using satellite images; as you trace, maps are immediately updated.

“Google Map Maker solves an inherent need especially for countries such as ours where maps data in sparse. This product embodies our passion to empower people everywhere, to share knowledge of the places they know best by creating maps,” Dr Lalitesh Katragadda, Software Engineer and Creator of Google Map Maker said.

This product developed by the Indian engineering team aims to ensure that the world is mapped and offers more information about locating features and tutorials for all the tools that can be used to improve the maps.

“This launch is the reinforcement of our commitment to bring more useful information to people around the world and especially to a hyper-growth country like India where maps are changing on a daily basis given the rapid of infrastructure development,” said Google Head, R&D, Prasad Ram.

“This is a great achievement for our engineering team,” he added.

The application will be useful in the country which has a vast territory, varying geographies and language and cultural diversity.

Google recommends using the hybrid view to locate places precisely and to zoom in to a range of 50 m to 1 km. You can add businesses using placemarks, mark roads with the line tool and add parks using polygons. This wiki offers more information about locating features and tutorials for all the tools that can be used to improve the maps. “This product is a labor of love by many engineers based in Bangalore who have a desire to see the world mapped,” explains Google.

Apart from India, Google Map Maker is available in 57 countries in Asia, the Island Nations and the Caribbean. Click here to know the list of countries editable in Google Map Maker.
