San Francisco — In a surprising turn of events, another standalone killer-apps-for-iOS, from Google serves as a new hedge against Apple’s waning support for integrated services. Google owned video sharing platform YouTube had just launched YouTube Capture, a new app for catching, editing, and posting videos from your iPhone or iPod touch.
With the newly released YouTube Capture, it is pretty simple to record a video on your smartphone and upload it directly to YouTube — all it takes is a few taps here and there, and it will be ready for viewing by the entire world. Users can post their videos simultaneously to YouTube, Google+, Facebook, and Twitter, or upload them privately. Advanced features let users perform color correction and stabilization, edit the video length, and even add music.

The app will let you quickly fire up the iPhone video camera and instantly upload your videos straight to YouTube with very little steps in between. The app also provides automatic color correction, trimming, free background music tracks, image stabilization, and overall faster upload times. It will also remind you to shoot with a horizontal device to avoid “vertical video syndrome.” Also, you can do all your uploading and sharing simultaneously, and you can also choose to just share your clips privately with your family and friends or with a URL.
The whole experience was designed to be fast and easy. As YouTuber Reed Morse writes today on the company blog, “Even if you minimize the app, the video will keep uploading in the background.”

A “landscape lock reminder” makes an effort to let users know their videos will look better if shot in landscape mode.

Unfortunately, YouTube Capture looks to be a simple, effective way of recording and sharing video to the Web. But it also captures a moment in time–one where two former close allies, Apple and Google, parted ways from integrating their software together and instead design standalone experiences that their customers must seek out separately. The apps tend to be more fully featured than they were when they were integrated, but they also require more work. And no matter how you feel about that trade-off, it is one we should probably get used to.
Anyways, the app is only available for the iPhone and iPod Touch at the moment, with an Android version set to launch sometime “in the future”. The iOS app should be hitting the App Store sometime today.
