Google Spruces Up Gmail With Custom Themes, Background Images

June 22, 2012 0

Mountain View, California –– Are you fed up of all the built-in themes that Google offers to beautify your Gmail? Well, if you like your webmail to give personalize effect, then you are on the right track as Google on Tuesday announced that it is introducing a new custom themes feature that lets you customize the visual theme and background image with your own photos, an online photo or a selection of featured images from Google+.

The new feature that Google is rolling out “over the next couple of days” would allow Gmail users to add personal touch to their inbox by setting their own background images, and if you do not see the latest feature right away, then it should be available soon. Google offered a similar option for Gmail before it unveiled its redesign of the service last year.

Explaining about the latest release, Greg Bullock, Software Engineer at Google, said “When we introduced Gmail’s new look back in November, we stapled a number of new, beautiful HD themes. We also heard that many of you wanted to bring an even more personal touch by setting your own background. So over the next couple of days we are rolling out a new Custom themes section with two options, Light and Dark.”

Moving forward, users will now easily be able to select and upload your own photo, any backgrounds you have previously uploaded to Google+ photos, your own photo directly, or paste any image URL. You can also browse Google’s search-able Featured Photos section to find one you on Google for an enhanced inbox look.

“Whether you want to enjoy on a tropical island or simply reminisce about last year’s holiday with the family, your Gmail can now be customized to your disposition,” the Gmail team wrote in a blog post Tuesday. “Find your perfect image and make your Gmail your own with custom themes.”

Steps To Set Up Your Own Theme:

To commence adding your own theme, click on the Settings cog in the upper right corner and select “Themes” from the drop-down menu. In the middle of the next page, you will see a section called “Custom Themes” with two choices: light and dark.

So, if you prefer cool atmosphere, then select the light, then your message area and compose windows will have a light whitish-gray tint to them, if you prefer contrast environment, then choose dark and your message area will feature a transparent black.

Apart from other nifty features, when you choose a custom theme for the first time, you will be asked to select a background photo. Next, you can either pick from a selection of featured photos on Google+ or your own photo albums on Google+/Picasa Web, and photos automatically uploaded from your phone to Google+.

In addition, if you decide to upload a photo, you can either drag-and-drop the photo into Gmail using a modern Web browser or you can upload it the old fashioned way by searching for your images using your system’s file browser.

Finally, once you have selected your photo the first time, you can later change it by simply selecting the “Change your background image” link in Settings>Themes>Custom Themes.
