Yahoo acquires Indextools to compete with Google Analytics ?

In an interesting development, Yahoo Inc, said on Wednesday that it will acquire all assets of Tensa Kft., more commonly known as IndexTools.

Indextools is one of the older Web Analytics companies. It may be recalled that Google bought off Web Analytics company Urchin in 2005. Since then the Web Analytics industry has been in a consolidation phase. But unlike Urchin (which was only into Web Analytics), IndexTools also has a hosted keyword bid management service.

Yahoo has announced that the first group of customers to benefit from these enhanced tools will be more than 150,000 small-to-medium businesses marketing on the Web with Yahoo!. Additional capabilities enabling third-party developers to monitor and optimize the traffic performance of their applications are expected to follow throughout the year following the acquisition.

What Yahoo plans to do with the hosted Bid management software is unknown. It’s tricky because Yahoo then has access to sensitive and competitive information (like how much money merchants are spending on Google Adwords).

This development comes two days after Yahoo reiterated its refusal to be bought out by Microsoft Corp at the software company’s original offer of $44.6 billion, or $31 per share.

Few months back, Microsoft also announced “Gatineau” which is their product pitched against Google Analytics.
